The shadow of death hovers at Thomas’ shoulder, luring the young Irish monk to take the final voyage of his Druidic Filid spirit. Brosius, who has been his strong right arm during their many adventures , can only stand helpless. His Chin friends use all the medical skills of ancient China to try to save the failing Thomas. Mad St. Brendan’s spirit is crumbling from his addiction to coca leaves and the greed that drove him to his obsession with godliness.
The lands of the Chin are in turmoil, between dynasties and leaderless. A merciless warlord raises a bloody sword of pacification. Brendan, Thomas and Brosius are sucked into the maelstrom of internecine war, a march over the timeless Silk Road of the Middle East, and a confrontation with the rift growing between the eastern and western arms of the Roman Church.
